What is a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)?

A blocked account is a specially restricted German bank account where you deposit your living expenses for one year before arriving in Germany. The German government requires it as proof that you can financially support yourself — so you don't need to work illegally to survive.

The account is "blocked" — you cannot withdraw all the money at once. After arriving in Germany and registering your address, €992 is released automatically every month to your regular German bank account for 12 months. That is your monthly living allowance.

You do not lose this money. It is YOUR money held securely at a licensed German bank. If your visa is rejected, the full deposit is refunded. This is not a fee — it is a temporary lock on your own savings.

Issued immediately when you open your account — even before sending any money. Use this to join the visa waiting list on digital.diplo.de.
✅
06 Letter
Blocked Amount Confirmation
Issued only after the full €11,904 + fees arrive. This is what the embassy requires for your physical visa appointment — the 05 letter alone is not enough.
⚠️
A Pakistani bank statement is NOT accepted. HBL, UBL, MCB, or any local bank statement showing your balance will be rejected by the German Embassy — no matter how much it shows. The embassy exclusively accepts the official 06 Blocked Amount Confirmation from Expatrio or Fintiba.
🚫
Coracle is closed for new applications (August 2025). Coracle stopped accepting new blocked account applications in August 2025. Do not attempt to apply with Coracle. Use Expatrio or Fintiba only.

💡 At approximately 310–325 PKR/EUR (April 2026), this equals roughly PKR 37.7 – 39.5 lakh. Check live rate at wise.com/currency-converter before transferring. Add your Pakistani bank's SWIFT fees (PKR 1,500–3,000) on top.
✅
Your actual non-refundable cost is only €149. Setup fee (€89) + monthly fees (€60) = €149 total. The €11,904 deposit + €100 buffer are returned to you. If your visa is rejected, even the €149 in fees is refunded under Expatrio's fair use policy.
💡
Fintiba costs significantly more. Fintiba charges €159 setup + €9.90/month = €277.80 in total fees for 12 months — nearly double Expatrio. Choose Fintiba only if you are under 18 (Expatrio doesn't accept under-18s) or need an instant credit-card confirmation.

Fill Questionnaire & Set Up Account

Answer the short questionnaire. Select €992/month and 12 months duration — the standard. Leave "Additional Basic Sum" at €0 unless your embassy specifically requested tuition fees be included. Enter your full name exactly as in your passport, Pakistani nationality, and home address.

Transfer the Money from Pakistan

Go to Portal → Blocked Account → My Payments → Initiate Payment. Select Pakistan. Use SWIFT transfer (domestic PKR) to pay in Rupees from your local bank — cheaper than Flywire. You can send in multiple installments (minimum 10% per transfer). The 06 Confirmation is only generated once the full amount arrives.

Always re-initiate a fresh payment from the portal before each transfer — never reuse old transfer details. See Section 5 for the full Pakistan transfer guide.

Receive Your 06 Blocked Amount Confirmation ✅

Once the full required amount arrives, the 06 Blocked Amount Confirmation is generated automatically within 1–3 business days. This is the single most important document in the entire blocked account process.

Download it from your portal, print it, and submit it as part of your visa documents when your submission invitation arrives from the embassy. Never submit the 05 letter to the embassy for your appointment — only the 06 letter is valid.

Pakistan-Specific

How to Send Money from Pakistan

You have three main options for sending euros from Pakistan. The critical rule before any transfer: always initiate the payment from your Expatrio portal first — the portal gives you the correct IBAN, reference number, and exact amount. Never send money using saved or old transfer details.

🚨
Transfers must come from you or close family only. Expatrio only accepts transfers from: you, spouse, parent/step-parent, sibling/step-sibling, grandparent, aunt/uncle, cousin, or child. Transfers from friends or companies are rejected and returned — causing weeks of delay.
⚡
RECOMMENDED
Pakistani Bank SWIFT (FTTtransfer)
Common method in pakistan through HBL, UBL, MCB, Bank Alfalah, Meezan...
International EUR wire from your bank branch using the IBAN from your portal. Always select "OUR" charge type — you pay all fees upfront so the full amount arrives. SHA/BEN charge types deduct fees from the transfer itself. Takes 3–7 business days. Bank charges: PKR 4,500–10,000.
💳
GOOD ALTERNATIVE
Wise (TransferWise)
wise.com — PKR → EUR
Initiate EUR bank transfer from your Expatrio portal to get the IBAN, then use wise.com to send euros to that IBAN. Offers better exchange rates than banks (~1–2% fee). Takes 1–3 business days. Widely used by Pakistani students abroad.
🏦
STANDARD
Flywire via Expatrio Portal
Faster than SWIFT, but more expensive
Expatrio's official payment partner. Select Pakistan in the portal and receive a local PKR account to transfer to. Your bank processes it domestically — cheaper and faster than SWIFT. Arrives in 2–5 business days. You can also pay in USD if PKR isn't shown for your portal.
💡
Tell your bank what this is for. This falls under Pakistan's personal foreign exchange quota (USD $30,000/year for education/travel). Tell your bank: "This is for a German student visa blocked account (Sperrkonto)." Bring your passport, Expatrio 05 Confirmation, and university admission letter (if available). HBL, UBL, MCB, Bank Alfalah, Meezan, and Standard Chartered all process this routinely for students.
📌
Check live EUR/PKR rates: wise.com/currency-converter or bloomberg.com/markets/currencies (the same source Expatrio uses internally). Your bank's rate will be 2–5% worse than the mid-market rate.

Once You're in Germany

Activating Your Account After Arrival

Your blocked account does not release money automatically when you land. You must activate it by completing these 4 steps in Germany.

1

Register your address — Anmeldung (within 14 days of arrival)

Go to your local Bürgeramt and register your German address. Book the appointment online before arriving — slots in university cities fill up fast. Bring: your passport, rental contract or landlord letter, and the Anmeldeformular (downloadable). You receive your Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) on the same day.

2

Activate your Expatrio blocked account

Log in to Expatrio portal → Blocked Account → Activate. Upload your Meldebescheinigung and set your payout start date. You can select up to 2 past months if you arrived earlier. Once activated, €992 transfers automatically on the first week of each month to your connected German bank account.

3

Connect a German bank account (Girokonto)

If you have Expatrio Value Package, your German bank account (UniCredit) is already included — activate it in the Banking tab. Alternatively, open a free account with N26 (fully online, English, accepts international students) — you need a German IBAN to receive your €992/month payouts.

4

Use blocked account statement for your Residence Permit

When applying for your Aufenthaltstitel at the Ausländerbehörde before your student visa expires, you'll need to show ongoing financial means. Download your Blocked Account Statement (Kontoauszug) from the Expatrio portal to show remaining balance. If you need a second year, apply for an extension account (€89 setup fee again).

Critical Warnings

Common Mistakes Pakistani Students Make

✗
Mistake 01 — Most Common

Submitting a Pakistani bank statement instead of the 06 letter

Your HBL, UBL, or MCB bank statement — even showing 40 lakh PKR — is completely rejected by the German Embassy. They exclusively accept the official 06 Blocked Amount Confirmation from Expatrio or Fintiba. This is the single most common reason Pakistani applicants get rejected at the visa appointment.

❌
Wrong document
Pakistani bank statements = rejected
✗
Mistake 02 — Very Common

Sending money without initiating payment from the portal first

Transfer details (IBAN, reference, amount) change with every payment initiation. Sending to an old IBAN or without the correct reference means Expatrio can't match your transfer — it can take weeks to trace. Always: Portal → Blocked Account → My Payments → Initiate Payment before every single transfer.

⚠️
Always initiate fresh
Old IBANs cause unmatched transfers
✗
Mistake 03

Confusing the 05 letter with the 06 letter

05 letter = account opened, no money yet → use to join the visa queue. 06 letter = full amount confirmed → the only document valid for your physical visa appointment. Submitting the 05 letter at your appointment results in rejection. They look similar — double check before printing.

📄
05 vs 06 letters
Only 06 is valid for the appointment
✗
Mistake 04

Using SHA or BEN charge type instead of OUR on SWIFT transfers

Always select "OUR" charge type for SWIFT wires — you pay all bank fees upfront. With "SHA" or "BEN," intermediary banks deduct fees from the transfer amount. If the shortfall exceeds your €100 buffer, you must make another transfer and wait again for the 06 Confirmation.

🏦
Always select "OUR"
SHA/BEN deducts from transfer amount

Your Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need €12,153 ready before I can open the account?▾
No. Open the Expatrio account first (no upfront cost), get your 05 Confirmation immediately, then transfer money in installments over the following weeks. You need the full amount confirmed (and the 06 letter) before your physical visa appointment — not to join the waiting list.
Is the €11,904 gone? Do I ever get it back?▾
No — it is YOUR money. After arriving in Germany and activating your account (by uploading your Meldebescheinigung), €992 transfers to your German bank account every month for 12 months — you receive the full €11,904 back. The €100 buffer is returned with your final payout. Only the €89 setup fee + €60 monthly fees (€149) are actual non-refundable costs — and even these are refunded if your visa is rejected.
What if my visa is rejected — do I lose the money?▾
No. Under Expatrio's fair use policy, if your visa is rejected you receive a full refund of the blocked amount (€11,904 + buffer) AND all fees (setup + monthly). Provide the official visa rejection letter from the embassy. The refund takes approximately 4–6 weeks. Funds go back to the same bank account used for the original transfer.
Can my parents transfer the money on my behalf?▾
Yes — parents are on Expatrio's approved family member list. Your parent can transfer from their bank account directly to your Expatrio blocked account, using the portal-generated reference number. The blocked account itself must still be in YOUR name — parents can fund it but cannot own it.
How long from opening to getting the 06 letter?▾
Registration (30 min) + identity verification (24–48 hrs) + Flywire transfer arrival (2–5 business days) + Expatrio generates 06 (1–3 business days) = approximately 5–12 business days total. Budget 2–3 weeks to be safe.
Can I send money in Pakistani Rupees (PKR)?▾
Yes — via Flywire (Expatrio's recommended payment method). Initiate payment in your portal, select Pakistan, and receive a domestic PKR bank account to transfer to. Flywire handles EUR conversion and forwards to your Expatrio account. This is much cheaper than a full SWIFT international wire in euros.
Will the €11,904 amount change before my appointment?▾
The €992/month figure has been unchanged since September 2024. It is set by the German government and reviewed periodically — it has gone up in the past with little notice. Always verify the current amount at help.expatrio.com shortly before your appointment.
Will €992/month be enough to live in Germany?▾
It depends on the city. Typical monthly costs: rent (€280–600), groceries (€180–250), transport (€30–90, semester ticket is usually subsidized), health insurance (~€120–140). In cheaper cities like Chemnitz, Magdeburg, or Kaiserslautern, €992 covers basics comfortably. In Munich or Frankfurt it is tight. Most students work part-time — up to 120 full working days per year on a student visa.
Is Coracle still available?▾
No. Coracle stopped accepting new blocked account applications in August 2025 — they cited a banking system upgrade with no confirmed timeline for reopening. Use Expatrio or Fintiba only. If you already have an existing Coracle account, contact them directly at coracle.de.
Can I extend my blocked account for a second year?▾
Yes. In your Expatrio portal, click "Extend" under Blocked Account before your current payouts are complete. Set the new amount and duration, pay the €89 setup fee again, and transfer the required funds. You can also open for up to 24 months at initial setup if you already know your program duration — this avoids the extension fee entirely.
